The Smith Mason & Co. Drilling Practices provides an understanding of the “big drilling picture” by providing practical and proven field drilling practices to recognize and interpret drilling trends. The course is based on answering the many “why’s” that usually don't get answered on a daily, weekly, monthly basis and is a “how-to” course for many drilling operations crews will encounter
The class is divided into “crews” made up of a cross-section of knowledge and experience – as much as possible based on the attendees. Each crew is introduced to the Projects Chapter of the manual. These projects, which take the place of an exam, are reviewed and assigned on the first morning. The projects are due by the end of the course on the 5th day. Historically, the students turn in 30-40 pages. The projects are graded on an individual basis and a report is generated indicating each student’s performance.
The course is heavily math laden and to that end, the students are given a scientific calculator and are taught to use it effectively.
